Make your own birdfeeder

Mar 26, 2026 | Winter 2026

By Abby Ciona

When it’s cold and snowy outside, it can be hard to look for wildlife. Why not bring the wildlife to you with a homemade birdfeeder? The birds will be thankful, and you can enjoy watching them from the cozy indoors.

Materials

  • String
  • Large pinecone (If you can’t find pinecones, you can also use a clean toilet paper roll.)
  • Natural peanut butter or natural sunflower butter
  • Butter knife (use with adult supervision)
  • Birdseed mix

Instructions

  1. Tie a loop of string to the top of the pinecone, enough to tie it to a branch or pole.
  2. Use the butter knife to spread a thin layer of peanut butter on the outside of the pinecone.
  3. Pour birdseed into a shallow dish.
  4. Roll the pinecone in the birdseed.
  5. Hang the birdfeeder outside in a tree or bush.
